Online RN to BSN Nursing Degree at Kent State University

Kent State University in Kent, Ohio is the academic home to more than 40,000 students. From modest beginnings as a "normal" school to train teachers to a Tier-1 research institution, Kent has experienced a wide array of academic and physical changes during its 100 years. In recent years the Continuing and Distance Education Office has been at the vanguard of some online education changes, and the fact that the university's most popular continuing education program is the online RN to BSN nursing degree is a sign of the times.

Kent State RN to BSN Nursing Program

The most popular program in the continuing education and distance education department, according to Executive Director Deborah Huntsman, is Kent's RN to BSN nursing degree, a fully online bachelor degree that transitions nurses with the RN credential through a Bachelor of Science in nursing. "Right now our largest online enrollment is in our online RN to BSN degree program," Huntsman says. "Our graduate programs are growing rapidly as well but typically are not expected to have enrollments as large as undergraduate online degree programs. Certificate programs have not yet reached their full potential but we expect that to change once employers begin hiring again and retraining becomes a greater need."

Many RNs complete associate degree programs at community colleges and hospitals, passing the N-CLEX to receive the RN. Career opportunities expand for nurses with the BSN, and the Bachelor of Science in nursing is also a requirement for moving on to master's-level nursing degrees.

The Kent State RN to BSN nursing degree is administered by the College of Nursing and is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, a U.S. Department of Education-approved national accreditation agency that works to develop and maintain standards for professional training in nursing.

Most registered nurses, like many professionals, lead busy lives, and fitting in college coursework can be difficult. Shift changes, sudden emergencies at work, and work-life balance can be obstacles to continuing education. Online RN to BSN nursing degrees like that offered by the Kent State University Continuing and Distance Education department offer RNs the flexibility they need, coupled with academic rigor and an accredited institution capable of providing the education needed for career advancement.

Admissions requirements for the Kent State online RN to BSN nursing program include:
  • RN license in the state in which you practice
  • Diploma or associate degree from accredited nursing school
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0 from prior education

Students can enter the BSN completion program at six different points throughout the year, and the RN to BSN program is completely online.

Nine courses are required for all nursing students:
  • Information and Patient Care Technology for Professional Nursing Practice
  • Inquiry and Research for Professional Nursing Practice

The remainder of the program is individualized, depending on the amount of transfer credit each student brings to the online bachelor degree program.

Tracey Motter, M.S.N., R.N., the undergraduate program director for the Kent State University College of Nursing, says "the benefits of our program include a totally online degree completion program. Students can take classes at whatever speed suits their life - one to four classes a semester, [with] seven-week courses that are offered year round. Students can complete the nursing course in 12 months of full-time study. Kent State is also a nationally recognized university for nursing. We are currently ranked fourth in the nation in size.
